The MKS of Lincoln and BMW 5 Series are considered as "worst performers" among big luxury sedans that are evaluated by Insurance Institute for the Highway Safety in test round of crash.
These cars were put through small overlap front test by Institute that shows how well driver is protected while front corner of the vehicle gets collided with other vehicle or the fixed object, like the tree or any kind of utility pole. The "Poor" rating in test applies to the Lincoln MKS sedan 2009-'15; "Marginal" rating was applied to BMW 5 Series 2011-'15.
The Infiniti Q70 2014-'15 & 2013 Infiniti M attained the "Good" rating in small overlap front test of the Institute. The Q70 was formerly known as Infiniti M.
" Lincoln MKS is the safe vehicle, that is well equipped with the driver assist & features of advanced safety for occupant protection & crash avoidance, having the structure designed for managing the crash energy under variety of the crash conditions," written by Kelli Felker, spokeswoman of Ford, in the response to query of Edmunds on Thursday.
She also added: "Safety is the greatest priorities in design of the vehicles. Our cars as well as our trucks regularly meet and exceed the standards of government safety in countries where they get sold".
Ford also prioritizes the tests which completely focus on the occupant protection and offer real world of safety benefits.
The Institute also said that "driver space is well maintained sensibly well" in test of Q70. But it also noted that “performance of Lincoln MKS in quite small overlap test that could not be more different.
"The space of driver was severely limited subsequent to the crash, with structure pushing to be 12 inches," it said. "Dummy's head rarely contacted with front airbag prior to sliding off left side and hitting at instrument panel."
However, Institute also noted that BMW 5 Series "performed to be better, earning the Marginal rating."
"Similar to MKS, the BMW 5 Series even saw 12 inches of the intrusion," it said. "Moreover, there was also considerably less intrusion at upper interior. Movement of the dummy was perfectly controlled, with the both front and the side airbags doing own jobs."
Acura RLX, Mercedes-Benz E, Volvo S80 and Hyundai Genesis earlier earned Good ratings in small test of overlap crash by Institute.
The tests of Audi A6, Lexus GS and Cadillac CTS are on the hold as the manufacturers said that they are making some changes to improve the overlap protection. So these models will get tested next year.
