1925 STANLEY STEAMER

The colloquial name of Stanley Steamer is given to the automobiles powered by steam manufactured by Standey Motor Carriage Company involving 1902 and 1924, eventually the Steamers lost out to fuel powered cars because of the availability afforded by an inner combustion engine with the motor electric starter– but a little there the cars powered by steam were a famous option.

The Stanley Model SV 252A Touring Car of 1925 exposed here is contemplation to be the last existing unretired Stanley Steamer which still works – an unbelievable feat of patience bearing in mind its 89 year duration. Minor modification of mechanical have been done over the periods, but the core arrangement of the car and its drive train keep the same because they were when they gone the factory in Massachusetts, Watertown, in 1925.

The plan of the drive train was amazingly simple and very secure – actually no Stanley Steamer has ever experienced a boiler bang, in the main because of the use of security valves and joints planned to break in the occasion of extreme pressure. In the year 1906 a car made by Stanley completely set the world record for the best ever mile ever recorded (at 28.2 seconds) – a best ever record which stood for five years earlier than being bust by a fuel powered rival. Amusingly, still the record stood because the best ever time for a car powered by steam until 2009 – later than 103 years.

The SV 252A Touring Car Model was powered by a two-cylinder, steam engine of 20hp and rode on the semi-elliptical 4-wheel leaf springs; they were perfectly fitted with Bosch snubbers on the face axle and four-wheel Lockheed hydraulic outside constricting brakes. Most of the Steamers utilized either kerosine or gasoline as a source of fuel even though there are numerous stories of owners testing with some other fuels – like ethanol, moonshine or alcohol.

In case you would like to add a Steamer to your group you may thoroughly be in luck, the car you check here is auctioned by Bonhams http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21929/lot/353/ on the Oct 6th, 2014 at the Museum of Simeone Automotive. The approximate hammer cost on it is between $70,000 and $90,000 USD – building it a good deal for the car of this unusual object.
